Patricia Raney had the good fortune to grow up in
a family that values creative expression. The Raney's spent most family
holidays in art or science museums, including a summer-long tour through
the museums of Europe when Pat was 10 years old.
Encouraged by her mathematician father to study
science, Pat studied molecular biology in college and spent eight years
as a researcher in that field before attending medical school. She
continued to take art classes whenever possible, including art history
and studio art in college, and a design series at the Museum School of
the MFA in Boston.
After graduating from medical school and
completing her residency, Pat joined the staff of Outer Cape Health
Services in Wellfleet. Shortly thereafter, under the guidance of
sculptor Ellen Sidor, she studied stone carving. Pat has become so
passionate about sculpting, that she has taken a sabbatical from her
medical career to work on her art full-time.
