Biography
Daniel Maffia was born in Nevers, France. He spent
his early childhood during World War II in an occupied village in
Normandy. After the war, he lived in the small farming town of Chigy in
Burgandy. It was during these years in Chigy that Maffia began to
dedicate himself to drawing.
He came to the U.S. in 1948 and attained
U.S.citizenship in 1959. After completion of his Master of Fine Arts
degree from Pratt Institute in NY, Maffia established an international
reputation for his award-winning portraits which appeared on the covers
of many major magazines. Between 1964 and 1970, he pursued his art but
chose not to show his work publicly. (See "Private Paintings of Daniel

Between exhibitions Maffia divides his time
between his studios in Englewood, NJ, Cape Cod, MA ,and Provence,
France. Maffia has taught at Sarah Lawrence College, Rutgers University,
Parsons School of Design and Pratt Institute. His work has shown in
galleries across the U.S. and France
